Alcatraz Island
The Alcatraz San Francisco is one of San Francisco's most popular San Francisco travel attractions. It's well known because of the prison that stood here that once served as the house of thousand prisoners. The Civil War Prisoners in 1861 onwards were imprisoned here.
It's most popular as the inescapable prison as it's on an isolated island that is enclosed by hazardous, cold, and strong current waters that even if you make it out of the prison successfully, you can't successfully escape that water.
There were, in fact, a total of 14 attempts of escaping from Alcatraz during its 29 years involving a total of 36 prisoners but the % success is 0. 2 of the escapees had drowned while many were caught and some had been shot. But it was in 1962 that an escape was successfully carried through by 3 prisoners named Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin. It was the only successful attempt but all 3 had been presumed dead as they have not been found.
Now, Alcatraz San Francisco does not welcome prisoners but it welcomes tourists instead. It's now a historic site and is now part of the GGNA and operated by the NPS or the National Park Service.
Alcatraz can be visited by riding a ferry from the Pier 33 just close to the Fisherman's Wharf. After riding the ferry you'd already be in this historical island. You can book a ticket from their tours so you'll really get to optimize your San Francisco CA travel there and learn about its rich history.
You'll find the cells where some of the famous criminals were imprisoned in. Alcatraz San Francisco is where Al Capone was imprisoned back in 1934. Also, George Kelly arrived here on that same here. Robert Strout moved here back in 1942. You'll also find the cell where the 3 escapees had chiseled their way out.
