Baker Beach Weather Information

With the breathtaking views of Golden Gate Bridge, it is no wonder that Baker Beach is becoming one of the most popular beaches with San Franciscans of all kinds. As a public beach on the peninsular of the Golden Gate City, this mile-long Baker Beach sits at the foot of the rugged cliffs on the western shoreline of the Presidio beginning just south of Golden Gate Point (where the bridge links with the peninsula).

Due to its location, the beach offers unsurpassed views of the tawny wilds of the Marin Headlands and the Presidio flanking the Golden Gate Bridge. This spot is becoming popular, also because it's on Federal land where nudity is permitted. As such it is also regarded as a nude beach.

Although it can be foggy there all day long even in summer, Baker Beach could be warm enough for sunbathing and picnicking. Best of all, there is also a picnic area with tables, grills and restroom facilities available in the cypress grove at the east end of the parking lot.

However, when it comes to sunbathing at Baker Beach, summer is not the best choice. Little in common with summers elsewhere, San Francisco summers frequently accompany with billowing white fog, wind and Central Valley heat. They are usually overcast and cool, while the marine layer typically gets shallower by the afternoon.

So if you plan on a visit to the beach in summer, do remember to check the weather forecast before setting out.

If you are looking for so-called summer weather, September through November tends to be the best time to visit Baker Beach. During these months, daily temperatures are at their highest throughout the peninsula. The temperatures are usually in the mid to high 60s, but often climb into 80s and 90s. With clear sky and bright stars, nights are also warm and suitable for summer dresses and short-sleeved shirts.

In that time, Baker Beach is always jam-packed with bikini-clad locals and out-of-town visitors slathered in oil and soaking the sun.

March, April and May are also the inviting months to visit Baker Beach. Neither too hot nor too cold, the weather is typically cloudless and mild. Some of the warmest and driest days of the year occur in these months and the fog doesn't roll in as much. Maybe March through May is not the good time for sunbathing, but picnic would be an awesome activity at the beach during these months.

Visiting Tips:

- If you are planning on a visit on sunny weekends, be prepared for crowds and parking congestion.

- Generally, nudity is allowed at North Baker Beach. That is to say, you may come across naked sunbathers at the north side. If you are offended by naked sunbathers, stay near the other side.

- Water bacteria levels could be high at Baker Beach from time to time, especially after it rains. When it is, the signs of no swimming are posted. However, due to rip tides and rough surf that have carried off many lives there, swimming at this beach is not advisable at any time.

- Good news for pet lovers is that the Baker Beach is a dog-friendly beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach north of Lobos Creek off leash under voice control. However, dogs need to be leashed south of Lobos Creek. For a comprehensive travel guide to Baker Beach, visit this page:
