The Fillmore
The Fillmore San Francisco Auditorium has been on San Francisco since the 1960's. It was Bill Graham's and he was really dedicated to giving the best shows to the San Francisco travel visitors from his auditorium. The shows that were played here back then were The Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Doors and so much more.
The auditorium usually played rock shows but there are also some that are of a different genre with singers such as Aretha Franklin having her show here too. There were poetry readings as well. Every night, Bill Graham would be bidding good night to the audience one by one and would give them some fresh apples.
It had been moved once to a different location at the Carousell Ballroom which he named as Fillmore West. The original Fillmore Auditorium was still used and named as The Elite Club as it became a private club. The Elite Club had been the venue for several punk concerts.
Fillmore had been opened once again in late 1980's but only to be damaged by the horrible earthquake that shook San Francisco, the Loma Prieta in 1989. After just 2 years, Bill Graham had an fatal accident as his helicopter crashed. The Fillmore was his dream and his friends made his dream come true by reopening the old Fillmore San Francisco.
In 1994, it opened and there was a surprise band who welcomed the crowd. It was none other than the famous Smashing Pumpkins! People went wild! Then the next day, the official reopening, Primus played.
The Fillmore San Francisco continues to be the "in" venue for concerts and shows and it will continue to bring in more crowd as it became Graham's legacy. Live Nation plans on putting more Fillmores around the US by chancing the names of their clubs such as Fillmore at Irving Plaza and Fillmore at TLA.
