Golden Gate Bridge
When you think of San Francisco, the first thing that might pop in your head is the Golden Gate Bridge. Since its construction in 1937, it had been recognized both nationally and internationally.
When there was no Golden Gate Bridge, people had to ride a ferry from San Francisco to Marin County. There were ferry companies who were making good profit out of the busy operations between San Francisco, Marin County, Hyde Street Pier and Sausalito but many just wished for a bridge to be built to make transportation a lot easier.
Many experts were skeptical about this and they thought building a bridge across 2,000 meters is next to impossible. Plus the strong winds and tides and the depth of the water would prove the project improbable but then, the construction began.
Joseph Strauss led the team of engineers to construct the bridge. He took most of the credit but he just led the team, most of the concepts were from the senior engineer of the project, Charles Ellis. The project cost about $35 million at that time.
The bridge made the locals very happy. Now, they don't need to regularly ride a ferry as they could drive to their destination through this famous red bridge. Much to the disappointment of the ferry companies.
Now the Golden Gate Bridge stands as a symbol of San Francisco travel city. It can be commonly seen in movies and photographs of San Francisco. It looks spectacular and up to this day, it's considered as one of the modern Wonders of the World. It was an engineering breakthrough. It looks beautiful during the day and even more spectacular at night. It did not only aid the locals with their transportation but it sets itself as the new Landmark for San Francisco and for California itself.
Have fun out there!
