In 1820, a ferry service was started to connect San Francisco and Marin County. By the late 1920s, the ferry service became known as the Golden Gate Ferry Company, the largest ferry service in the world. The first concrete proposal came from James Wilkins in 1916. In 1923, the bridge official name was decided as the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District. The construction began on January 5 1933 and was finished in April 1937, costing about $34 million. The opening celebration began on May 27 1937 and lasted for a week. The day before vehicles were allowed on the bridge, about 200,000 crossed it on feet and roller skates.
