Golden Gate Bridge History

In 1820, a ferry service was started to connect San Francisco and Marin County. By the late 1920s, the ferry service became known as the Golden Gate Ferry Company, the largest ferry service in the world. Since San Francisco was largely disconnected despite its importance as a city, there were many voices that talked about a bridge being built over the strait. The first concrete proposal came from James Wilkins in 1916. Although the initial cost was estimated at $100 million, an impossible amount at that time, it was brought down to $17 million by Joseph Strauss, who already had the experience of building about 400 drawbridges.

In 1923, the bridge official name was decided as the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District. The construction began on January 5 1933 and was finished in April 1937, costing about $34 million. The opening celebration began on May 27 1937 and lasted for a week. The day before vehicles were allowed on the bridge, about 200,000 crossed it on feet and roller skates.

There are many hotels San Francisco CA that are located close to the Golden Gate Bridge. Staying in one of them allows visitors easy access to the bridge and its attractions.

What is Golden Gate Bridge History?

The Golden Gate Bridge history began before it was even constructed. Long before the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed, the people in Marin County and San Francisco travel by boat. There are ferry companies that profit big because of this and since it's such a hassle to travel this way, many wanted to build a bridge to connect the two islands.

There are problems though such as the distance between the two islands and the strong current and depth of the water that goes as deep as 500 feet. Strong winds was also a huge factor and experts back then thought it would be impossible to create such a bridge.

In 1916, James Wilkins was able to conceptualize an idea for a bridge and it will cost them $100 million which was too much for the city. Joseph Strauss then was able to develop a new design that would be worth $17 million to build.

There were lots of debates, criticisms and discussions that happened before the final blueprint was created. Then, on 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was finally complete.

For 72 years, the Golden Gate Bridge continues to bridge the 2 islands of Marin County and San Francisco. It did not only serve its purpose for travel but it also became the image of San Francisco, California. With regular repairs and maintenance, this bridge will surely last for many more years to come.
