Walking through Mission District - Finding out the Oldest Buildings in San Francisco
Mission District is a neighborhood that has one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco. The Mission San Francisco de Asis from which the neighborhood gets its name was founded in the year 1776. This is a very active music and art community with a lot of artists calling it their home. There are a lot of local and Spanish cultural institutions established out here in the mission.
When one is walking through the mission one should also pay attention to its numerous murals that adorn the walls and structures of this area. Initiated by the Chicano movement in the 70s these give the Mission its unique flavor among the locals and those who come to visit it.
The district is also noted for its contribution to the mainstream cuisine. It is instrumental in popularizing Mexican food and there is a special burrito style local to San Francisco that you must try. The reason why this area is so famous and draws artists around the country is the low rent and the density of local businesses, bars and restaurants operating in the area.
If you are an artist seeking an audience, collaborators for your work or any inspiration then the Mission is the place to be. There are numerous art projects, studios, and non profits that work trying to push the boundaries when it comes to art and music in particular. Some notable people who have resided in the Mission in the past or who come frequent the place or who are associated closely with it are Ruby Neri, Scott Williams, Dan Plasma and Barry McGee.
