Where Can You Find Japantown San Francisco Map
Anyone planning to travel San Francisco should certainly pay a visit to Japantown to get a taste of Japanese culture and food. The area also has a wide variety of shops selling electronics goods and Japanese and English books. There are also fancy Japanese boutiques and a few art galleries to be found.
The San Francisco Bay Area has seen the influx of the Japanese since the 1860s. They had first settled in Chinatown and the regions south of Market Street. However a dangerous fire in that area caused these people to move out and settle west of Union Square. They not only built their homes but also several eateries and stores here. This place came to be called Nihonmachi or Japantown.
You must surely pay a visit to Japantown's centerpiece which is a Pagoda that is 100ft (30m) tall built by Yoshiro Taniguchi, a Japanese architect. Another Japanese landmark in the same area includes a Japanese mountain temple gate that was constructed in 1976. It served as an entrance to the Buchanan Mall, now called the Osaka Way.
