Market Street
Market Street San Francisco is one of the main streets in San Francisco. It stars from Embarcadero and leads southwest towards the downtown area as it passes through the Civic Center and enters the Casino District. It then leads towards the intersection in the Twin Peaks area.
Market Street cuts the San Francisco city in half diagonally. When you walk through the Market Street, you'd see San Francisco through its rich historical monuments to its high buildings. You'd practically see most of San Francisco just by walking or driving along Market Street.
The street had been laid out by Jasper O'Farrell when it was constructed. It was back when the town was still called Yerba Buena which was later renamed as San Francisco back in 1846. He laid out the Market Street to be the widest street in the town of Yerba Buena. It was described by the town's people to be the road that leads to the Twin Peaks which, literally, is true.
For over a century after its construction, the Market Street San Francisco has had a major makeover in the 70's and the 80's as the Muni Metro had been moved underground together with the construction of BART system.
There had been several festivities that had been celebrated in Market Street over the years. In Christmas Eve of 1910, Luisa Tetrazzinni, an opera singer, sang for the people of San Francisco. There are several parades here as well. The most memorable of all festivities happened on the eve of the turn of the century back in December 31, 1999. Over 1.2 million had jammed the street to party and welcome the new millennium!
Market Street San Francisco is one of the longest streets in San Francisco travel city and it had seen the dramatic changes of the city over the years. The once empty lots are now packed with new buildings, hotels and restaurants and it will still continue to see drastic changes over the years.
Have fun out there!
