On weekdays expect more congestion in the direction of the city early in the morning and the opposite in the evening.

On the weekends, you might want to think twice about using the Golden Gate Bridge, unless you're ok with spending a lot of time dealing with congestion. Starting Friday afternoon, and up until Sunday evening, the traffic on Golden Gate Bridge can be very tight thanks to tourists and others pouring into the city.
