English still remains the primary language in San Francisco. But, a host of other languages are spoken widely including Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Persian, Punjabi, Navajo, Yiddish, and Swahili.
This is due to a great number of immigrants tracing their roots back to Latin America, Asia and Africa. Asian immigrants primarily come from countries like China, Vietnam, the Philippines and India.
It must be kept in mind that countries like China and India have a great number of languages. Most Chinese immigrants speak Cantonese or Mandarin while most of the Indians in San Francisco are from the northern state of Punjab and speak Punjabi.
