The San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge and traffic in recent times
Known to most people simply as Bay Bridge, this world-famous monument was recently closed to traffic for major repairs which commenced on the 27th of October and ended on the 1st of November. This repair was necessitated when two rods and cross bars came apart on the bridge resulting in the toppling down of 5,000lbs of metal onto the rush hour traffic. One person suffered minor injuries.
The closing of the bridge caused major traffic problems with citizens experiencing the worst traffic snarls so far. Many spent over two hours getting to work. The bridge underwent a stress test before it was opened up for rush hour traffic on 2nd November, 2009.
