The other name for Alcatraz Island is "the rock". The island was a high security prison. The prison was closed in 1963 after an apparent escape in which no bodies of the prisoners were recovered. The island then became a part of Golden Gate national recreation area. Both day and night tours are available from Thursday through Monday.
