The trend started in the 1970's with twenty to thirty thousand people attended the Gay Pride parade. However, in 2008 there were approximately 1.2 million people attending the festival.

The festival is a two day feast that takes place on a weekend in June and has the main parade on Sunday mornings. There is also a separate transgender parade that takes place on Friday night before the festival.
