The meter charges $3.10 for the first 1/5th mile you travel, after that it adds $0.45 for every subsequent 1/5th mile. When traveling from airports, there is a $2 surcharge involved. This pertains only to the San Francisco airport (SFO). The Oakland airport (OAK) involves a $3 bridge toll. The approximate cost to SFO ranges between $32 - $40 (inclusive of $2 surcharge), while the fare to OAK ranges between $51 - $82 from San Francisco and the SFO.

All bridge tolls are paid for by the passenger. Any waiting involved is charged at $0.45/minute.

Tips, if given, generally range between 15-20% of the total fare.

Considering the steep cost of living in San Francisco, the city was forced to up is minimum wage paid twice in as many years. On January 1, 2008 the minimum payable wage increased from $9.14 to $9.36.

The rate was upped again effective January 1, 2009 to $9.79. The current minimum wage is $1.79 more than that of the state of California.

San Francisco's minimum wage is determined each year by the consumer price index. San Francisco has been determining the minimum wage this way since the creation of the Minimum Wage Ordinance in 2004.

The current rate will remain effective for the year 2010 as well.
