There are three basic routes that people choose from when making a trip from LA to San Francisco. These are referred to as the Green route, the Black route and the Back Way.

The fastest among the three is the Green route which is a six hour trip that traverses 382 miles. To get this short journey done make use of the I-5. Just keep in mind though that it's a boring route as opposed to the more scenic option.

The second option of making use of the US Highway 101 is the second longest route which consumes 7.5 hours of travel time.

The third option is the most interesting though it can take upto two days.
