In 1996 the Compassionate Use Act was passed in the state of Californian and applied to the city of San Francisco as well. Under this act patients who needed marijuana for their treatment could be administered medical marijuana to help cure their illness.

Patients can apply for their medical marijuana and after their case is evaluated they can receive a patient's identity card which helps them get their dose of medical marijuana.

Medical marijuana centers are active throughout the state of California and there is one in San Francisco as well.

Oakland city which is located close to San Francisco has an NFL team named the Oakland Raiders that plays along with San Francisco's 49ers in the Western Division in the National Football League.
