
San Francisco History
Know something about the city history before you travel to San Francisco. The San Francisco history is greatly influenced by it location as it is a natural center for marine trade. It is presently fourteenth largest city in the country characterized by drastic economic changes and diversities of its culture. Before the coming of the Europeans invaders, the area was inhabited by Yelamu tribe belonging to linguistic group living in the coastal and bay area.
San Francisco history shows that Europeans were attracted by the climate and foggy weather along with geographical location that forced them to settle here. With the Spanish exploration was established a small settlement of colony and military fort. European invaders and Russians also visited the bay area in 17th century.
After independence from Spain, San Francisco became a part of Mexico. San Francisco history reflects that later in 1850 it was declared as a city and county by State of California. Situated at the tip of peninsula the city lacked most of the basic necessities like the water or firewood. These natural disadvantages forced the settlers to bring food, water and fuel to the city before settlement.
Much of the land developed was marshland granted to the city by military governor Stephen Watts. The San Francisco history shows that the city was a seat for county in the earlier times. The city hosted lawlessness due to which the State of California divided the county into two parts - the county of San Mateo and county of San Francisco. It formed California's only metropolitan municipality.
The city has been a magnet for America's counter culture. In the mid nineteenth century the city was an important publisher of literature. San Francisco history reflects the city being centre of hippie with other alternative culture in 1960s. Seven years later the city popularly came to be known as Summer of Love with thousands of people pouring into the city for San Francisco travel and tourism.
